Look closely to install AVG Free 9

AVG Free has been a valuable tool in the battle against malware offering a decent level of protection without costing people anything. It benefits everybody in the long run because fewer unprotected computers mean fewer bots, computers that have been hijacked by hackers and used in online attacks.

image The trouble is that when a new version comes out, AVG Free 9 in this case, the upgrade process causes some headaches. The AVG window says that a new version is available with a large, friendly, button to upgrade. The problem is that the webpage you get taken to doesn’t appear to have any reference to the free version. Click on the image on the right to see the full page as appeared on my computer.

image If you want to stick with the free version of AVG, you will need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and look for the rather small text ‘update my current product only’.

I can’t blame AVG for wanting people to upgrade to the paid protection, but I don’t think it should be this hard to upgrade. At least you know now.

Alternatively rather than clicking on the Upgrade button from the AVG Control Panel, and this I remember from the release of AVG 8.0, go directly to http://free.avg.com and the links to download the free version are clearly marked.

I suppose it's true, but people tend to 'scan read' nowadays, you'd think something as important as Anti-virus protection would trigger a "whoooaaaa" in the clicker's mind - saying "slow down, let's READ this, for a change".
It really isn't difficult at all, people have merely become too simplistic and grabbing in their outlook, which of course the virus-writers and spammers all love.

Totally agree with the above comments. Have used AVG Free for years . However, am very disappointed with version 9.0 as it seems impossible to disabke it to install new software???

AVG 9 is excellent. I have always used AVG Free and this version is friendly and efficient. Anyone having trouble mut be doing something wrong.

AVG had better keep AVG 7.5 free going until they repair 8.0. the resources 8.0 took made me wonder if I had installed another well-known AV program that's a resource hog, by mistake.

I run version 8.5 of AVG.I clicked on the update for version 9 which shows up when I double click the AVG icon, and it downloaded Yahoo Toolbar for Internet Explorer which I don't use. Every time I try to download version 9, I get put onto a site that doesn't exist or the download doesn't start. Version 8.5 still keeps getting updated so I'll wait till someone stops playing silly games and making it too hard. Thanks for your info. I looked closely.
