Hotmail gets POP3 access

You can now use your own email client with Hotmail because it has been given POP3 access worldwide. Having said that there’s nothing wrong with Live Mail. But if you use a different client the details you want are as follows.

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Here’s how it should look in Thunderbirdimage

And then the SMTP

Wow, hotmail sure has come a long way since the three years that I have used it.

Ha, 2006? I was a registered using in 1996, back when they called themselves HoTMaiL ;)

It's about time MS rolled out POP3 for Hotmail. In fact, just two weeks ago I configured a friend's iPhone for his Windows Live account - something I would've had to use a push mail aggregator to do before that. Frankly, I'm a little surprised it took them this long to sort it out (their tactic of holding back POP3 access for their premium subscribers worked well, didn't it? ;)

Wow, this has been a long time coming! Finally though, I've been waiting for it forever. I have my main account on Gmail, it seems like they've had all of these key features since it was invite only. Regardless though, I'm glad to hear that Hotmail is catching up with the times!

This is great news. I tried to configure a friends iphone a few months ago and got really frustrated that I could not setup the download of email from her hotmail account. She ended up opening a gmail account just so she could get email on her iphone.

FINALLY! This was one of the reasons I stopped using hotmail. I liked it and I thought it did a better job than yahoo at screening spam but it was annoying that I couldn't pop the account.

Hotmail sure has come a long way. I personally use Gmail but I was reading about how Gmail limits the no. of accounts, so I guess it's time to setup an account with hotmail and compare both services. Still I am sure Gmail will beat most free email providers.
