More info on Windows 7 versions

Having posted last night very quickly about the Windows 7 versions, here is some more information. Microsoft has released an interview with Mike Ybarra, the Windows General Manager.

It seems that the list I linked to needs a little bit of context. There will still be lots of versions but two will be given greater prominence, Home Premium and Professional. Much like the good old days of XP. Of course it remains to be seen whether manufacturers choose to keep it simple.

Versions that I’ve been able to pick out of the interview (it would have been helpful if a list had been in the interview):

  1. Home Premium
  2. Professional
  3. Home Basic
  4. Starter
  5. Ultimate
  6. Enterprise

One change that springs up is that Home Basic is for emerging markets but Starter will be available worldwide.

Pricing is yet to be announced.

Any more up to date information on a release date? Watch a video yesterday with Windows 7 on the HP touchscreen, looked very responsive.

I liked the win 7, but I'm doing some tests in Linux, I have found the fedora core 10 offers great tools for a simple user like me and my wife. I can do ALMOST everything with linux now.

The old versioned Windows packages need to go! Consumers should be able to buy two different products, home and professional. The professional edition should give the option to select which utilities and programs need be installed, as to free up system resources and give professional users the option to eliminate bloatware and unneeded utilities.

Sorry, I'm a litte untechy and don't understand computer terminology too much. Windows 7...does that refer to the upcoming OS? I currently have XP on my computer, but plan on buying a new computer soon. I am not sure about what Windows 7 is, but I have heard a lot about Vista. I have heard good and bad things about it, so I am not sure which OS I should try to get. Any thoughts?
