Safely remove gripe

imagePractising what I preach, I always use the Safely remove hardware shortcut in the Notification Area to remove a USB disk, whether flash or otherwise.

imageOnly there is a slight problem of not enough information. As you can see here I’ve got three disks attached. But no  information as to which is which. I’ve named the volumes so that I know what they are but this text doesn’t appear in the menu.

This also is true of Vista.

Anyone know of a way to do this?

Well, go to My Computer, right hand click on the drive and select safely remove, or is that only an option in Vista? My apologies if that's the case :) Have a nice monday!

A) First rename all your external drives.

1) Goto 'My Computer'
2) Right-click on one of your external pen-drives, or whatever, scroll down to 'Rename', and duh, rename it to take into account its function. Once you've renamed it, the drive-letter will be added automatically. Don't forget to include the size as well when you rename.
3) Repeat step 2) for all the other extra drives.
4) Exit from 'My Computer'

B) To remove a drive safely.

1) Goto 'My Computer'
2) Left-click on any drive EXCEPT the one you want to remove, because if you left-click on the drive you want to remove, and then do all of the stuff below, you'll get the message on the lines of 'This drive/device is in use. Cannot remove.'
3) Now move the mouse down (don't click) to highlight the drive that you DO want to unplug safely.
4) Right-click 'Safely remove', and you know what to do from then on.

FOR EXAMPLE.
I have renamed my gigabyte external three drives as:-
Baz 16G Docs Backup [Automatically assigned drive (E:)]
Baz 4G General Temp Downloads [Automatically assigned drive (F:)]
Baz 8G Music Videos [Automatically assigned drive (I:)]

The previous commenter and the 'Vista has the answer' page-link didn't really answer your question, which was all about "not enough information."

This post should provide you (and others) with a complete solution.
